The Digital Services Act (DSA) is a regulatory framework introduced by the European Union to create a safer and more accountable online environment. It imposes obligations on digital service providers, including online platforms, to address issues such as illegal content, disinformation, and transparency. The DSA applies to a wide range of digital services, from very large online platforms (VLOPs) to smaller intermediaries.

Key Obligations Under the DSA:

  1. Transparency: Platforms must provide clear information about their content moderation policies, algorithms, and advertising practices.

  2. Content Moderation: Platforms must have mechanisms to remove illegal content and provide users with the ability to report such content.

  3. Accountability: Platforms must conduct risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate systemic risks, such as the spread of disinformation or harmful content.

  4. User Rights: Users must be informed about content moderation decisions and have the right to appeal.

  5. VLOPs and VLOSEs: Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) and Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs) face additional obligations, such as independent audits and data sharing with authorities.
